Steps

  1. 1
    Check card details
Verify card number, expiry, CVC and billing address (including ZIP), and that funds are sufficient.
  2. 2
    Complete 3DS
Allow pop-ups/redirects, disable ad/pop-up blockers, and complete the bank OTP or app approval without closing or refreshing checkout. Try an incognito window or another browser.
  3. 3
    Check regional eligibility
Purchases are only available in supported countries, and the card must be issued by a bank in one of them; for renewals both you and the issuer must be in a supported country.
  4. 4
    Clear cache and retry
Clear browser cache and cookies, then try again.
  5. 5
    Contact your issuer
Some banks don’t enable online or international payments by default. Ask about holds and to enable 3DS for online, recurring or cross-border payments.
  6. 6
    Contact OpenAI support
If all else fails, contact support through the OpenAI help center.

When to switch cards

If you have followed the official steps and your issuer confirms there is no block, OpenAI suggests trying a different payment method if possible. Make sure the new card meets the same issuing-region rule.

Why you usually see just one message

Per Stripe’s public docs, a payment can fail because the issuer declined it, payment processing did not go through, or a technical error occurred. Users usually only see “Your card was declined”; the issuer can tell you the specific reason.

OpenAI states prepaid cards cannot buy API credits. Whether ChatGPT Plus accepts prepaid cards is not published.

Will I see a Stripe decline code?+

Usually not. Decline codes are returned to the merchant. We list codes from Stripe’s public docs only to explain common decline categories; which processor OpenAI uses is not published.
