Steps
- 1Check billing locationCheck Anthropic’s supported billing locations: your payment method’s billing address and origin country must be eligible and match each other.
- 2Check billing addressThe billing address must exactly match your bank’s records; even a missing accent or misspelled street can cause a decline.
- 3Complete 3DSIf 3D Secure is required, enter the one-time password or approve in your bank app.
- 4Use an accepted methodOnly credit and debit cards; PayPal, Venmo and other third-party processors are not accepted.
- 5Check fundsMake sure the balance covers the total including tax.
- 6Retry later or contact your bankTemporary technical or network issues may resolve on their own; otherwise ask your bank, or contact Anthropic support.
When to switch cards
If the official steps don’t help, Anthropic suggests using another payment method if you have one. Make sure it meets the same billing-location and address rules.
How Claude declines differ from ChatGPT
Both companies say they don’t receive detailed decline reasons, both point you to your issuer, and both require 3DS when prompted. Anthropic additionally stresses that the billing address must match the origin country and your bank’s records exactly, and that PayPal/Venmo are not accepted.
